Policies on Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Drugs
The Graduate Center is committed to being in full compliance with the Federal Drug-Free Schools
and Communities Act Amendment of 1989 (Public Law 101-226). The unlawful manufacture, distribution,
dispensation, possession, or use of drugs, alcohol, or other controlled substance either on University property
or at University-sponsored events is prohibited - and subject to college action and/or criminal prosecution.
Any action or situation, which involves the forced consumption of drugs for the purpose of initiation or
affiliation with any organization, is prohibited.
The possession or use of illegal drugs is a crime in the State of New York. Anyone found in possession of
or using such drugs on college property will be severely dealt with and may be expelled from the college
(in addition to being criminally charged).
Employees of the University/college must also notify the College Personnel Director of any criminal drug
statute conviction for a violation occurring in the workplace not later than (5) days after such conviction.

Alcohol
The legal drinking age in New York is 21 years and the law is as applicable at the college as
anywhere else whether in the context of the restaurant or any gathering, however informal, where alcoholic
beverages, including wine and beer, may be available. Any intention to serve alcoholic beverages incidental
to any event must be confirmed via the event planning or room reservation process, and sponsors and hosts
are responsible for checking ID's, refusing service to persons under the influence, and ensuring that alcoholic
beverages are not removed from the premises.
It is against the law in New York State to sell or give away alcohol to anyone under the age of 21.
The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of alcohol by students or employees on University/college
premises or as part of any University/college activities is prohibited.
Any student found to be in violation of The Graduate Center’s policy with regard to illegal drugs or alcohol (including under aged drinking) shall be subject to the following range of sanctions as defined in the Bulletin of The Graduate Center: admonition, warning, censure, disciplinary probation, restitution, suspension, expulsion, ejection, and/or arrest and criminal prosecution by civil authorities. Any visitor, licensee, or invitee found to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to ejection and, if applicable, to arrest by civil authorities. Any organization that authorizes the violation of this policy shall have its permission to operate on campus rescinded.
Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Assistance - Formal drug and alcohol abuse education programs are not held at The Graduate Center. However, the college publishes a brochure detailing the drug and alcohol use policy and provides information on common drugs, symptoms, uses, effects, hazards, hotlines, and penalties. Persons who are experiencing problems with drug or alcohol use may receive free, confidential health counseling and referral services in the Wellness Center (Student Health Services, 1-212-817-7020, and the Psychological Counseling and Adult Development Center, 1-212-817-7020).
