Policy Statement

The well being of the individual and this institution being founded on respect for dignity, freedom from fear and injury, the protection of rights and the conservation of resources, The Graduate Center will abide no infringements thereof.

Accordingly, the security of its students, staff, faculty, affiliates and visitors, along with its premises and property, is not a peripheral factor but central to the achievement of its educational, research, and cultural mission. With this perspective, the college has integrated a spectrum of security considerations into its operations that range from the visible element of officer presences to the invisible elements of property, privacy and data protection.

The Graduate Center’s Office of Security and Public Safety prepares this report as required by the Student-Right-to-Know and Security Act. Yearly crime statistics for this report are compiled on a calendar year basis and in accordance with the definitions provided by the FBI for use in Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system. Applicable crimes include: Murder/Non-Negligent Manslaughter, Negligent Manslaughter, Forcible and Non-Forcible Sex Offenses, Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Burglary, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson. These statistics include the previous 3 (2006, 2007, 2008) years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus and on public property immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. Hate Crimes statistics, separated by category of prejudice, are also compiled for the above mentioned crimes as well as Larceny, Simple Assault, Intimidation and the Destruction, Damage or Vandalism of Property.

These statistics are gathered from reported crimes to the Office of Security and Public Safety, security and public safety officers, other campus officials with significant responsibility for students and student activities as well as those crimes reported to the local police precinct. These statistics also include persons referred for campus disciplinary action for categories required under the Clery Act including liquor law violations, drug law violations and illegal weapons possession.
