Reporting Crimes
The college encourages the prompt, voluntary reporting of crime by victims or witnesses to both the
Office of Security and Public Safety and the NYPD in the interest of the college community and public safety. A security incident
report will be prepared and an investigation conducted in an effort to apprehend the perpetrator
of the offense and/or to prevent reoccurrence. Crimes should also be reported to the Office of Security and Public Safety to insure inclusion in the annual crime statistics and to aid in providing timely warnings to the community when appropriate.
Crimes in progress and any other emergency on campus should be reported immediately by calling x7777 from any college telephone, by pressing one of the blue light emergency assistance stations in the corridors and public assembly spaces or by pressing the emergency tapeswitch in the restrooms. An officer will be dispatched immediately to the site of the complaint.
Other reports can be made to the Director of Security and Public Safety, and/or the Assistant Director of
Security and Public Safety directly by calling 212-817-7761 during office hours and via 212-817-7777
at anytime. Reports can also be made in person at the Security desk in the main lobby or to any uniformed officer in the building.
Crimes can also be reported to other Campus Security Authorities who have significant responsibility for students and campus activities including: the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Student Affairs and the Associate Director of Student Affairs and Director of Student Activities (Room 7301, 212-817-7400). The intent of including non-law enforcement personnel as campus security authorities is to acknowledge that many people, students in particular, are hesitant about reporting crimes to the Office of Security and Public Safety or the police, but may be more inclined to report incidents to other campus officials. College counselors are encouraged to inform victims or witnesses they are counseling
that they can voluntarily and confidentially report crimes for inclusion in the annual disclosure of crime
statistics.
Confidential Reporting Procedures - If you are the victim of a crime and do not want to pursue action within the University system or the criminal justice system, you may still want to consider making a confidential report. With your permission, the Director of Security and Public Safety or designee can file a report on the details of the incidentwithout revealing your identity. The purpose of a confidential report is to comply with your wish to keep the matter confidential, while taking steps to ensure the future safety of yourself and others. With such information, The Graduate Center can keep an accurate record of the number of incidents involving students, employees and visitors;determine where there is a pattern of crime with regard to a particular location, method, or assailant; and alert the campus community to potential danger. Reports filed in this manner are counted and disclosed in the annual crime statistics for the institution.
Timely Warnings - Timely warnings through
community-wide emails will be made to the college community
by the Office of Security and Public Safety within 24-48 hours
whenever a crime that poses a continuing threat to others is committed, in an effort to protect the community and prevent
similar crimes.
Crime Alerts are usually issued for the following UCR classifications when they pose an ongoing threat: arson, aggravated assault, criminal homicide, robbery and sex offenses and may be issued for other crimes as deemed necessary. In addition, a daily Crime Log that records by the date the crime was reported, any
crime that occurred on campus, on a non-campus building or property, or public property or within
the patrol jurisdiction of the Office of Security and Public Safety will be maintained. The log is kept
in Room 1204 and Room 9117 and is available for public inspection.
